The Interpretation of the esse in Cornelio Fabro’s “Intensive Thomism”

Among the interpretations of St. Thomas thought, a relevant place belongs to Fabro’s one, especially in regard to the esse, true speculative nucleous of the thomistic Metaphysics. According to Fabro, the esse is an intensive act, having a double emergency, namely a formal and a real one, in such a way that in respect of him, the essence becomes potency. Consequently, the esse looks as the genetical nucleous of the being and the last term of the resolutive path of the reflex thinking, so that the first plexus becomes the first nexus in the step to the transcendency.

The Thomistic doctrine of sensation is characterized, among other things, by the frequent recourse to the distinction between two types of immutation: a spiritual and a natural one. In developing this distinction converge perennially valids philosophical principles and outmoded aspects of classical Physics. The same seems to occur in a strange text, where is attributed to the corruptible bodies, by virtue of their dependence on the heavenly bodies, the ability to achieve an effect that transcends the possibilities due to them as corruptible bodies: to diffuse their form in a way of spiritualis intentio. Entre las interpretaciones del pensamiento de santo Tomás corresponde un lugar destacado a la de Fabro, especialmente en lo tocante al esse, verdadero núcleo especulativo de la metafísica tomasiana. Para Fabro, el esse es un acto intensivo, dotado de una doble emergencia, a saber, formal y real, de tal modo que con respecto a él la esencia se configura como potencia. Así, el esse luce como el núcleo genético del ente y el término último del camino resolutivo del pensamiento reflejo, de tal manera que el primer plexo se convierte en el primer nexo en el pasaje a la trascendencia.
